Overview

An effective tool for preventing children from accessing pornographic content and at the same time allowing them to use educational and informational resources is a unique information analysis instrument which filters web content. Such a solution is offered by WhiteNet Home Edition, which has been created by Latvian software programmers as an innovative programming product which automatically includes assigned logic that identifies restricted content.
What does it mean and how does it work? Installation of the software does not require a lot of time, and does not require much technical knowledge. When installing the software, the user chooses a password without which a user will not be able to erase the software. The software is activated from the moment when the internet page is opened (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Opera, etc.), and prior to opening each page, the software will analyze its content. The creators of the software have worked out such a quick program that users will not notice the time the software takes to analyze the page. In the event that the website contains unwanted information, then the internet browser window automatically closes. With the software, it is possible to not only prevent the viewing of harmful web pages, but also to block data exchange which is saved on the hard drive, to block access to chat rooms, as well as to receive reports on attempts to perform restricted actions, and when these acts took place. The software package of WhiteNet Home Edition includes a dramatic tool which can limit a child’s access to harmful content – a computer use time control module, which specifies certain time periods where it is permitted to use the computer.
How is the WhiteNet Home Edition software package different from software produced by other companies? In the marketplace today, there are various software programs whose basic function is Parental Control.
It must be pointed out that the main shortcoming of most of these products is that they do not contain intelligent analysis – the basis for the programs is the so called "Black list" (list of websites with harmful content; the filter compares the website's address to the "Black list" and discovering a match, will deny access) or a ”White List” (list of websites without harmful content, and the filer will allow access to any internet site that is not mentioned in the "White list"). The software program WhiteNet Home Edition contains both functions mentioned above, and also supplements them with intelligent analysis logic – the filtering is performed not only through the website addresses (since thousands of new websites appear every day) but also by its content, which allows the WhiteNet Home Edition software to increase the amount of harmful content it is able to filter.
Another positive aspect of the software is its support for many languages. Many harmful websites contain key words in not only English, but also Russian, Latvian, and other languages. Since most information is sorted by search engines according to key words, WhiteNet Home Edition analyzes content in many different languages, thereby posing an obstacle to harmful websites from affecting your children.
In the future, the functions of WhiteNet Home Edition will be expanded, and programmers are working on supplementing data protection mechanisms for users’ hard drives or for data transmitted over the internet. The software will be improved, and will offer new options for blocking even more complex and harmful dangers on the web.
Without a doubt, even one hundred percent effective software will not be able to fully protect children from possible threats. This is why it is necessary to involve parental controls, educational workers, and the support of the government by implementing software products that block access to unwanted internet websites.

Administration and security

Current level of PC knowledge among users is quite high, particularly among children and teenagers. Accordingly there appears a possible risk that WhiteNet Home Edition can be turned off or even deleted from the computer of the user, concerning whom those restrictions were set. In order to prevent such type of situation, a set of solutions has been created that ensures protection against unsanctioned changes in the functioning of the software.
Access rights authentication to the administrative section which activates and deactivates the software and changes it's settings can be done only with a password.

Program authorization window

If the administrator has forgotten the password, he/she is able to change it with the help of a "secret phrase" which is set by the administrator during program first time setup.

The "Black" and "White" lists

Blocking applications (DC++, eMule, Torrent, ICQ, Skype, etc.).

There are many resources on the internet which may require restricted access for children. For example, pornographic content can be spread in many different ways, not only using a web browser (to enter pornographic websites), but also with special applications which are designed for file sharing between computers. There are a lot of such programs available today: Emule, DC++, Edonkey, etc. These are similar programs which work is based on ”Peer To Peer” principle, where users can exchange files between individual computers without using a server. The WhiteNet Home Edition monitors and blocks such programs execution directly on the user’s computer.
There may also be other undesirable computer programs for communication (ICQ, Mirc, AOL, Skype, etc.) which WhiteNet Home Edition blocks in a similar way like it blocks file sharing programs. In order to block these or other similar category programs, the administrator should set necessary marks for the types of programs he/she wishes to block in the system settings menu.
